How to Stick to Your New Year’s Weight Loss Resolution?

January 4, 2023

New year is the time for new beginnings. Most of us would have made resolutions that are health-related, especially those associated with weight loss. Losing weight usually tops the list of resolutions we make, but it is also one of the toughest ones to manage and stick to.

So, what makes weight loss resolution hard to follow? Why do most people fail at this resolution? The solution to this problem lies in spending adequate time preparing and planning well in advance. People should set realistic goals for themselves that are achievable. Only when we have a vision of the goal in mind can we work towards achieving it.

6-tips to stick to your weight loss resolution

    1. Make small goals: Take baby steps to reach your weight loss goal. Focus on one resolution or goal this new year instead of struggling with too many at a time. Once you achieve the smaller goals, you can go ahead and create bigger ones. For example, if you wish to eat healthy, a suitable action would be to avoid potato chips on your next trip to the grocery store. Once you feel you have overcome this habit, you can move onto the next one.
    2. Do not blindly follow any diet: As part of the resolution, we tend to switch to a new diet, hoping to attain results. During this process, it is critical to avoid any fad diet (a popular or trending diet) that promises quick results. Know your body and try to set achievable goals. Do not deprive yourself of food or eliminate a food group suddenly. Choose a diet carefully after verifying all the facts.
    3. Replace, don’t resist: To stick to your weight loss goal and yield results, replace your junk foods with healthy eating habits. Trying to resist the urge to eat the foods you usually eat makes your weight loss efforts futile. For example, grab a handful of almonds next time you want to eat potato chips.
    4. Track your goals: It is said that “seeing is believing.” Putting your weight loss goals in writing will help you stay focused. Stick it in places where you can easily read it, like on your mirror or on the refrigerator. Make sure that your weight loss goals are measurable. Journal your progress to create accountability and to keep track of your consistency.
    5. Try an exercise that compliments your weight loss journey: Exercise, along with healthier eating habits, is beneficial to your weight loss journey. As an add-on to your weight loss routine, try following exercise videos at home, taking workout classes, climbing the stairs, etc. This will help you create a routine that will yield long-term results. A routine is key to keeping a resolution.
    6. Reward yourself for small achievements: Setting up a reward system will keep you on track and help you to remain motivated. For example, decide on gifting yourself a new pair of shoes for every 10 kg of weight that you lose until you reach your ideal weight. Such incentives will help you move onto bigger milestones without losing interest, as you will have something to look forward to.

In a nutshell, having a structured weight loss plan that is SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Framed) will help you stay committed to your resolution this coming new year. Stay focused and stay healthy!
